2010-The Forum printed and distributed new copies of a 2010 edition of “Morgan County Menus”. During the 2010 County Fair, the Forum brought three experts in the field of nutritional biochemistry and health, Capt. Joe Hibbeln, nutritionist Evelyn Tribole and Dr. Doug Bibus, to talk with Morgan County residents. County residents of all ages won awards in the Very Short Video Contest at the 2010 Fair (4 of 14 entries in “Sciences” and 4 of 16 entries in “Foods that Prevent Problems”). FAST sponsored community lectures and discussions by Capt. Joe Hibbeln, who held multiple meetings on omega-3 fatty acid deficits and depression with local doctors, school coaches and personnel. Dave Banks started a wellness demonstration project with school staff who used Omega-3 Balance Scores to "Nix the 6" and "Eat the 3" (more links to the project are on the home page).
2009 - FAST held a community discussion of “Living with Alzheimer’s” led by Dr. Matt Hahn with informative handouts from the National Institute on Aging. Also, Dr. Joe Hibbeln led an open public discussion of nutrition and neuroscience, considering how vitamin-like omega-3 fats affect human behavior. Grants were made to add a fitness station to the new walking track being developed in North Berkeley and to help the Ecology Coalition develop public brochures for the local recycling center. Awards were made at the County Fair for three very short videos in sciences. Hundreds of new 2009 updated “Morgan County Menus” were distributed at the County Fair as well as the Morgan County Library and the WVU Extension Office.
2008– FAST made three awards in Sciences during the County Fair Exhibit Contest. We also participated in the Paw Paw branch of the County Fair. The County Fair Hands-On Room exhibits included a revised display about sugar calories that had circulated among County schools (complementing a new NIH curriculum supplement on the science of food energy balance; “Calorie Intake and Physical Activity”). A three-dimensional display of Morgan County hydrogeology was prepared for the Fair.
2007– The Forum printed and distributed hundreds of copies of the 2007 revised edition of “Morgan County Menus”. FAST made three awards in Sciences during the County Fair Exhibit Contest.
2006– A revised edition of “Morgan County Menus” was reviewed with enthusiasm at the Clinical Nutrition Division of the UCLA College of Medicine. Copies of booklet and pedometers were provided free at the County Fair. FAST travel grants were made to for students to attend an educational camp on the Chesapeake Bay. FAST made four Fair Exhibit Contest awards in Sciences during the 2006 County Fair. The display on sugar calories was also used by Morgan County 4H groups, and made more portable for future use. A unique evening discussion by Commander Hibbeln of the NIH described some of his research on how nutrition affects human behavior.
2005– FAST converted “The Morgan County Diet” into “Morgan County Menus”, and distributed it to all 300 attendees at an international US Dept. of Commerce meeting in December, showing them our example of grass-roots health education. Travel grants were made to six Morgan County students to compete in the national Academic Olympics in New Orleans. Four awards in Sciences were made at the 2005 County Fair Exhibit Contest. The Hands-On Room exhibits included a display on sugar calories that later circulated among County schools (complementing a new NIH curriculum supplement on the science of energy balance; “Calorie Intake and Physical Activity”). FAST continued sponsoring community discussions that examine health and nutrition, integrating healing aspects of complementary and alternative medicine as well as promoting nutrition education of adolescents in primary prevention of cardiovascular disease.
2004–FAST began book reviews and community discussions of nutrition and health, combined the handouts into “The Morgan County Diet” and expanded it later with more healthy advice and menu plans. FAST co-sponsored acquisition of exercise equipment at Widmeyer School with the Health Olympics to have the first healthy walking track in Morgan County.
